Easykart Drivers Compete in Final Round of FKCS
Monticello, FL, August 25-26 – The final race of Florida Karting Championship Series sponsored by Andersen Racepark, Ocala Gran Prix and Easykart Distributors held at Monticello Karting on August 25-26, would finalize several class championships for the Easykart classes as well as decide the winner of the new BMB Easykart to be given away at the series banquet in September. They weather was an issue as Saturday saw overcast skies and a chance of rain all day with the humidity levels in the high 90’s. Sunday was a little better, as temperatures dropped into the low 90’s and a steady breeze kept this cooler.
Coming into the Monticello round Easykart 60 driver Michael DeQuesada was leading the points championship by 70 points over Brian Lockwood and 195 over 3rd place Mayo Livingston. Only DeQuesada and Lockwood had been on the top step of the podium at any time this year and neither driver had finished worse than 4th. With his current points deficit, Lockwood would need a win and a little luck to take the championship from DeQuesada.
Monticello is the home track for Lockwood and Livingston, so each had their sites set high going into qualifying. But once it was over DeQuesada would have the quickest lap of 1:09.579 which was a new track record in Easykart 60, using the new Easykart/Vega tire combination. Jacksonville winner Sebastian Sagarra would settle in 2nd 0.440 back from DeQuesada. Livingston posted a lap of 1:10.030, good enough for 3rd, Lockwood ran a 1:10.775 for 4th and rounding out the top five was Chris Maxson.
The Pre-Final was almost a carbon copy of qualifying as the top four would finish in their qualifying positions and local driver Nicholas Boyett would be the only change and finish in 5th. Livingston would also receive a one position penalty for avoidable contact during the race dropping him to a 3rd place finish. DeQuesada would jump into the lead at lap one, but that was short lived as Sagarra would take over the top spot on lap two and begin a battle with DeQuesada that would last until the end with Sagarra coming out on top with the win! Mayo Livingston who had worked his way up to 3rd at lap 7 would drop out of the race on the last lap. Lockwood would finish in 3rd with Boyett in 4th and Maxson in 5th. The win would be Sagarra’s second of the year and he would end up third on the year. Lockwood’s solid 3rd place finish would lock him into 2nd place in points overall. Michael DeQuesada would end up the 2010 FKCS points winner and Easykart winner after his win at Monticello. DeQuesada would not finish lower than 2nd all year!
The Monticello locals would make up half the field in the Easykart 100 class. Local favorite Nicholas Shealey knew going in he could do no better than 2nd overall in points, but had a fight on his hands for the prize of the new BMB kart. Nicholas would but on a show in front of his home crowd this weekend starting with pole position 0.693 clear of his closest competitor Jorge Sagarra. Tim Venable, another local would qualify 3rd, Jonathon Kotyk would be 4th and 2007 Easykart 60 US Grand Finals winner Drew Kimbrel finished off the top five.
Shealey wasn’t done proving himself as he set off to win the Pre-Final by an impressive 5.8 seconds over 2nd place Sagarra, whom started lap one in 4th. Jonathon Kotyk would come on strong to finish in 3rd. In the Final Sagarra would capture the lead at the drop of the green and hold onto it until lap 3 when Shealey would get by going in the famed Fangio turn and the end of the long straight. Shealey then set out to set quicklap after quicklap on his way to victory. Sagarra would finish 2nd followed by Kotyk, Kimbrel and Venable. Shealey’s win concreted his points lead in the chase for the kart and will pick up his prize at the year-end banquet. Sagarra’s 2nd place finish meant that he would capture the FKCS Easykart 100 Championship!
Barring a DQ, Easykart Lite driver Joffrey Amaya had the championship sewn up, but the battle for the new BMB kart was close between Amaya and Jamie Shahan, it could go either way. In some of the closest qualifying of the weekend Shahan squeaked by Amaya by 0.087 to qualify on pole with a 1:00.426. Local driver Michele Hummel would be 3rd at a 1:00.772 followed by locals Curtis Morgan and Will Courreges. Amaya got the lead on the green of the Pre-Final and Shahan settled into 2nd followed by Hummel. Hummel would get past Shahan as he struggled with changing track conditions on lap 2 and fell back. Amaya and Hummel continued to fight it out for the race and Amaya took the win by .2 over Hummel.
Amaya would once again gain the lead at the green and start to pull away from the rest of pack. Hummel, Shahan and first time 125 Lite competitor Gage Ferguson would battle for the rest for the podium. Hummel held 2nd for a few laps until Ferguson got by her on lap 5. Shahan fell back to 4th after running 2nd and would finish there. Finishing order was Amaya, Furgeson, Hummel, Shahan and Morgan. Amaya’s win means he is the 2010 FKCS Easykart 125 Lite Champion and the winner of a new Easykart.
Monticello Karting driver, Nick Rickert would win the Easykart 125 Heavy Championship by just showing up, but the battle for the new kart would not be settled until qualifying. By virtue of one racer choosing to run the local option class Rickert would win by default. But that wouldn’t be the end of Rickert’s weekend, as he would qualify on pole by 1.732 seconds over Todd Kovi, whom would be elected the 2011 Florida Karting Championship Series President at the event, win the Pre-Final and Final after Kovi got into trouble going into turn one and left the track. Rickert will pick up his new BMB Easykart at the banquet.

August 8, Jacksonville, FL – Five races down and one to go, the weekend of July 24-25 at the recently repaved 103rd St Sports Complex, hosted by the North Florida Kart Club, was the setting for race number five of the Florida Karting Championship Series sponsored by Andersen Racepark, Ocala Gran Prix and Easykart Distributors. This would also be the third of four races in which Easykart drivers would race for the chance to take home a new BMB Easykart chassis and motor! Easykart 60 qualifying was tight as Ocala winner and point leader Michael DeQuesada would end up 2nd to Mayo Livingston, whom would turn in a pole time of 40.868, just over a tenth quicker than DeQuesada. The top five separated by a mere .8 tenths. Livingston would begin lap one of the Pre-Final in first with DeQuesada hot on his heals. At lap three DeQuesada would spin relegating himself to 5th as Sebastian Sagarra, Brian Lockwood and Chris Maxson would benefit from DeQuesada’s misfortune. DeQuesada would put on a show as he came from 5th on lap four to pick off one driver a lap to finish in first passing Livingston on the last lap. On his way to the Pre-Final victory DeQuesada would also set fast lap of the weekend at 40.434.
Lap one of the Final was led by DeQuesada with Livingston in 2nd, Sagarra 3rd and in Lockwood 4th. Lap number two saw Livingston get involved in contact and drop back to 5th. He would make a charge passing Lockwood on lap three, Maxson for third on lap four. But his drive would end on the final lap while attempting a pass took himself out in the area between turn’s one and two to finish 7th. Sagarra having moved into 2nd after Livingston’s misfortune on lap two would give chase to DeQuesada to no avail and settle for 2nd as DeQuesada took the black and checked flags in first. Chris Maxson would get by Brian Lockwood in lap 10 to finish 3rd. After a review of the race a one position penalty was given to DeQuesada for pulling out of line at the start, relegating him to 2nd and Sagarra to the win! Your top five were Sagarra, DeQuesada, Maxson, Lockwood and Dezo Kovi. The Easykart 60 race should go down to the wire at the last race in Monticello as DeQuesada holds a 70 point advantage over Lockwood and both drivers have two wins on the season.
The Easykart 100 class once again sported eight drivers and once again would prove the quickness of the Easykart 100 package as times would fall into the 35’s as Nicholas Shealey would post a quicktime of 35.967 to set on pole and hold fast lap of the weekend. Just 0.039 back was Jonathon Kotyk and rounding out the top three was Tallahassee’s Tim Venable. Two drivers found themselves on the DQ list as Bryan Horowitz was found to be lacking a required safety cable on the exhaust pipe and Jorge Sagarra Jr would be DQ’d for non-spec fuel. The Pre-Final was a game of follow-the-leader as only a single pass by Sagarra over Drew Kimbrel for 7th proved to be the only excitement. Shealey would gain the lead from his pole position and never look back. Kotyk would finish 2nd followed by Venable, Orson Meyreles, Horowitz, Sagarra and Kimbrel.
The 100 Final was much more exciting than the Pre-Final as right from the start the drivers would start under yellow for not lining up for the start correctly and off-pole Kotyk would capture the lead on lap two followed by Shealey and Horowitz who made a great start coming from the rear of the field. At the completion of lap three, Shealey over-drove turn one and drive off-course dropping back to 5th while running 2nd. This would allow Kimbrel to move into 3rd after following Horowitz up thru the field on lap two. Sagarra would make several passes to eventually finish third as Kotyk pulled out a 3-second win over Bryan Horowitz. The FKCS points battle will be decided at the last race of the year with Horowitz, Sagarra and Kotyk still in the running.
The Easykart 125 Lite class felt the brunt of the slacking economy as several regular drivers failed to make the Jacksonville race. Ocala winner Jamie Shahan would capture pole with a time of 35.650 a mere 0.035 seconds over point leader Joffre Amaya. Amaya would be busted in the Tech shed for non-spec fuel and have to start from the back of the field. Newcomer Tom Mury would gain the second place on the 125 Lite grid in his first FKCS start. A Pre-Final start filled with contact in the first few turns saw Shahan drop back to the tail of the multi-class field and Amaya gain the lead. Amaya went uncontested in the Pre-Final as Shahan was unable to get around traffic. Amaya was also given a one spot penalty (overall) for pulling out of line at the start of the race.
Amaya once again got a great start in the Final and would lead the first two laps until dropping back and falling out of the race on the final lap. Shahan would take the win over Mury and Amaya for his first win of 2010.
Easykart 125 Heavy saw a few more entrants as Monticello Karting fielded half of the entrants, giving an indication of what is in store at the final stop of the FKCS series in Monticello next month. Ocala winner Nick Rickert would capture pole with a time of 36.200, followed by Peter Pestano with a 36.603 and 2nd in points Todd Kovi posting a 37.060. At the start of the Pre-Final Rickert would gain the lead pull away from the other Easykart drivers and begin to mix it up with the Rotax within the multi-class run group. On lap six Nick would spin to avoid a spinning Rotax driver and drop off-track to eventually finish 3rd setting fast lap of the weekend on his final lap with a 35.787 second lap. Pestano would capture the Pre-Final win with Kovi just 2 seconds back and newcomer Kennan Buzbee unable to take the field in either qualifying or the Pre-Final.
Buzbee would make the start of the Final, but Pestano would not, the battle was on between Kovi and Rickert. The pair would battle it out for 10 laps as Kovi would pull Rickert on the long straight-away as the IAME motor had top-end and Rickert would attempt to pass between turns two and five was the BMB motor showed to have more torque off the bottom. Buzbee would drop out on lap three due to mechanical problems. The fight between Kovi and Rickert would go down to the last lap as Rickert attempted a last lap pass on Kovi and was surprised as Kovi slowed into turn one causing Rickert to hit and spin both Kovi and himself. In an impressive showing of sportsmanship Rickert, who got underway first from the spin, waited and allowed Kovi to take the lead. Kovi would take his first win of the 2010 season and close the point gap in the race for the new BMB kart to be given away at the end of the year.
June 27, 2010 - The next round of the Florida Karting Championships Series race will be held in Jacksonville, FL at the 103rd St Sports Complex, hosted by the North Florida Kart Club on July 23-25th.
